Life's Ever-flowing Stream

I've had a few conversations over the past month on the theme of impermanence. Things don't always stay the way they are in the moment we may experience them, they appear and then disappear. We may never know what will stay, and for how long; whether that's a good or bad situation, a positive or negative feeling, a meeting of a person - all things come to pass.

At the end of March, I came into contact with a kindred spirit who was only going to be around for a few months. I could choose to not engage, or I could practice the philosophy of "in this moment, an opportunity, live it", and I'm so glad that I did the latter because my life is richer for it.

With all the joy I was feeling, I was also learning through the process of letting go, knowing that all of what had been sown was going to end. I was working towards an ending, and although this felt challenging at times, I appreciated the experiences I had.

As this special person was getting ready to leave the city and be without technology for the next year, they invited me to keep in touch in a different way, something I did not expect.

Just as much as we might think that impermanence is the ceasing of things, it can also be the flow of things. We may not know whether the stream flows and settles in a pool, or whether it journeys on and joins a river.

May we move tenderly along the paths set in front of us, and hold gently onto the way things are. These moments too may pass.
